Flute from the Beginning

The first step in trying to achieve a sound out of the flute requires a bit of perseverance in finding a comfortable position for your lips on the head joint of the instrument. Your lips should work closely together leaving a small gap to blow down and through the flute (kind of like blowing over a glass bottle that already has some water in it).

Once you've got some sound (which may take a few tries), you can then start exploring pitch. The first three notes on the flute are B, A, G which is easy to remember if you just remind yourself of the word 'bag'. These notes use fingers 1, 2 and 3 of the left hand and go over the first three holes. Once you've got these down, you can play tunes such as Mary had a little lamb, hot cross buns or merrily we roll along!
